  14.                 STATEMENT BY THE PRESS SECRETARY
  15.  
  16. President Clinton has asked Ms. Robin L. Raphel, a career foreign 
  17. service officer and one of the State Department's leading experts 
  18. on South Asian Affairs, to be his personal representative at the 
  19. funeral of slain Sri Lankan President Ranasinghe Premadasa.
  20.  
  21. In an earlier statement, the President expressed his outrage at 
  22. the brutal act of terrorism that led to the death of President 
  23. Premadasa.  President Clinton applauded President Premadasa's 
  24. efforts to promote his country's development and raise the 
  25. standard of living of all Sri Lankans.
  26.  
  27. The funeral is scheduled for Thursday, May 6 in Colombo.
  28.  
  29. Earlier today the White House announced the President's intention 
  30. to nominate Ms. Raphel as Assistant Secretary of State for South 
  31. Asian Affairs.
